Radiation

This position is disputed by some scientists, including Professor Denis Henshaw of Bristol University.
He questions the conclusions of the latest study, published in the British Journal of Cancer.
“Country studies have not had enough statistical power to see an increase of childhood leukaemia near power lines,” he told BBC News Online.
“The pooled analysis of country studies has clearly shown a doubling of child leukaemia at levels well below what you get under power lines.”
He believes melatonin plays a role in protecting the body against damage that can lead to leukaemia and may be disrupted by strong magnetic fields.
“The study carried out by Dr Lloyd and colleagues did not involve melatonin,” said Professor Henshaw. “Therefore, while publication of this study is to be welcomed, failure to observe an effect of magnetic fields on these cells may be unsurprising.”
The latest study used blood cells from a donor to test the effect of magnetic fields on the normal repair process.
The researchers blasted cells with radiation to create the sort of damage that leads to cancer.
They found that the cells repaired themselves naturally, even if they were exposed to stronger magnetic fields than those found in British homes.

Debate

Eddie O’Gorman, chairman of the UK charity Children with Leukaemia, said: “There is now a clear case for immediate government action.
“Planning controls must be introduced to stop houses and schools being built close to high voltage overhead power lines.”
But Professor John Toy, Cancer Research UK’s Medical Director, said: “People who currently live or have lived near power lines in the past need not panic about this research. The triggers that cause childhood leukaemia are most likely a random course of events over which a parent has no control.
A spokesman from the Health Protection Agency said the study findings suggested that at least some of the increased leukaemia risk might be associated with factors other than electromagnetic fields.
Dr David Grant, of Leukaemia Research, said: “We recognise there is a lot of public anxiety and concern about living close to pylons and exposure to power-frequency magnetic fields.
“There is no reason why anyone should be advised to move house on the basis of these new results.”
There are around 7,000km of high voltage power lines involved in the transmission of electricity across England and Wales, and 21,800 steel pylons.

Opinions

The survey to underpin the work was conducted through Ipsos Mori and involved interviews with some 11,000 people aged over 18, mostly face-to-face, last April.
Of those, more than 7,000 knew of Darwin’s work already.
People were asked which statements were closest to their own opinion about how evolutionary theory should be taught in science lessons in schools.
The highest proportion agreeing that evolutionary theories alone should be taught was in India, at 49%, followed by Spain (42%).
One in five in China and in South Africa thought other perspectives – and not evolutionary theories – should be taught.
Those opting for evolutionary theory “together with other possible perspectives, such as intelligent design and creationism” ranged from 38% in Spain to the 68% in Argentina.
“It is quite an interesting response and we need to think about why that is,” said the head of the Darwin Now programme, Dr Fern Elsdon-Baker.
Her feeling is that the debate about Darwinism has been portrayed as very polarised: science versus religion.
A previous survey suggested a lot of people were open-minded about having a faith and understanding that evolutionary processes occurred, and she thinks the polarisation of the arguments has confused them about how science works as a process.
“The majority of people in each country polled felt it was acceptable to have faith and think evolution happens by means of natural selection,” she said.
So it was necessary to communicate science in a less dogmatic, more sophisticated way, she said.
Darwinism remains controversial.
In March Turkey’s scientific and technological research council pulled a cover article about Darwin from its popular magazine, provoking outrage among scientists.
Dr Elsdon-Baker said: “It would be ridiculous to suggest that there haven’t been problems with the Darwin anniversary – but the British Council project, which is working in 45 countries, has had a very positive response.
“There’s clearly a demand for these kind of science communication activities around Darwin’s theory of evolution by means of natural selection.”

Public outcry

Part of the planned route cuts through the Cairngorms National Park.
Fears have also been expressed in the Stirling area that the metal towers would destroy the historic landscape and pose cancer risks to children living nearby.
The company said that overall there would be 200 fewer pylons than on the existing 132,000-volt transmission line, but that the new ones would be bigger. Their height would range from 42m to 65m.
Almost 80% of the pylons would be lower than 57m. The height of the pylons on the existing line ranges from 25m to 41m.
Campaigners have urged the company to put the cable underground but an independent inquiry found this would cost between six and 12 times as much.
Peter Pearson, spokesman for protest group Stirling Before Pylons, said the structures were almost as high as the Wallace Monument and threatened to come within a few hundreds yards of it.
However, Scottish Renewables criticised the protest.
Chief executive Maf Smith said: “The exploitation of a Scottish icon like the Wallace Monument is a typically emotive tactic by anti-wind power protestors, but the fact is they know they are firmly in the minority and are fighting a losing battle.”
He said a recent independent survey found that 72% of Scots agree wind farms are necessary to help meet the country’s current and future energy needs.
As well as demanding a public inquiry, critics have called on Stirling Council to object to the “poorly thought out” pylon proposals.
A Scottish Executive spokesman said: “The Forum for Renewable Energy Development in Scotland (Freds) assists with the development of energy policy in Scotland.
“Freds considers that many of the current proposals for onshore wind development are speculative and are likely to drop out of the system.
“The executive agrees with this view and does not expect anything like all of the current volume of developer interest in onshore wind to be consented.
“We have made clear our aim to see Scotland’s renewable electricity generation targets being met through the development of a range of technologies and we will bring forward detailed proposals in order to achieve that aim.”

Pylon planning move sparks anger

Scottish and Southern Energy has rejected calls to bury cables underground as part of a planned major upgrade to its power network.
The energy firm has lodged a formal application to construct an overhead transmission line from Beauly to Denny.
Part of the proposed line runs through the Cairngorms National Park. The firm plans 600 67m-tall pylons, 200 fewer than present, but they would be larger.
A consultation process will start within the next two weeks.
While urging the public to participate, the company has rejected calls to lay cables underground.
It claimed burying the 180-mile transmission line would be far more damaging to the environment.
Scottish and Southern Energy said the pylon line was essential to ship power produced by new wind farms and hydro schemes in the Highlands and Islands to customers further south.
Campaign group Cairngorms Revolt Against Pylons has called for a local public inquiry following the application.
The group warned that the move would totally contradict the park’s central aims, as well as undermining Scotland’s reputation for wild landscapes.

Digging the battlefield

Society member Fraser McRae fears many of the dead which still lie on the battlefield could be disturbed if plans to build a major power line cut through the site.
“The pylons will require foundations and that will mean digging huge holes right across the battlefield,” said Mr McRae, 61, of Montrose.
“Many of the men who died here still lie here after almost 300 years and we don’t think it’s acceptable that they should be disturbed at this time for this reason.”
A Scottish clan has held a protest against plans to build pylons and a power line at a historic battlefield.
The line will cross Sheriffmuir, near Stirling, where the Clan MacRae was virtually wiped out in a battle during the Jacobite rebellion.
The remains of the fallen are still at the site of the battle, fought by Royalist and government forces in 1715.
Scottish and Southern Energy promised to make a fully informed decision on the route of the 137-mile line.
The transmission line is planned to run from Beauly near Inverness to Denny near Falkirk.
The Clan MacRae Society held a protest on Saturday at Sheriffmuir to echo calls for a public inquiry into the proposals.

Oliver role beckons for Gwion, 11

An 11-year-old Carmarthenshire boy has spoken of his excitement after being chosen to star as Oliver in a musical in London’s West End.
Gwion will share the title role with Harry, 12, and Laurence, 11, in Cameron Mackintosh’s forthcoming show.
They were chosen by Mackintosh and Andrew Lloyd Webber from eight finalists who appeared on the BBC show I’d Do Anything.
He will start rehearsals in October for the show, which opens in December.
Gwion, who had been whittled down from thousands at auditions, said: “It was very nerve-wracking at first waiting to find out and then, when I was told I was Oliver I was ecstatic.
“I couldn’t quite believe it and I thought I was dreaming. My mum gave me the biggest hug ever and I couldn’t breathe.”
Lord Lloyd Webber, who is also judging potential Nancys in the television show, said: “Cameron and I agree we have three very different Olivers, but I think it’s a great result and I think whichever Oliver you go and see you’re going to get a fantastic performance.”
Gwion will perform with the three finalists for the Nancy role – Jessie, Jodie and Samantha – on Saturday before the public vote for their favourite.
He will then return to school on Monday for the final weeks of the term before he leaves for secondary school.
His teacher Davina Evans said the whole school was proud of him and had been supporting him during the weeks he had appeared on the TV show.
She said: “A couple of teachers have been up to the show and we realised by the response from the Nancys and from everybody there that he was very popular and we did think he had a bit of a chance but then again you’re too frightened to set your sights too high.
“But we’re delighted now that he has got the part.
She called Gwion a “very busy boy” with many hobbies, including swimming and playing the piano and cornet.
“He’s a child that gives 100% to everything,” she said.
“He takes everything in his stride.”
Gwion will rotate the role of Oliver with fellow finalists Harry, from Oxfordshire – who has a Welsh-speaking mother Sian – and Laurence, from Cheshire.
They competed with the other finalists, taking on an “Oliver task” each week and performing a group number in the main television show.
Unlike the women auditioning for the role of Nancy, the boys were not chosen by the public.
