Blog:Focus on procedures

Following criticism of the handling of the south Wales case, Professor Liam Donaldson, the government’s Chief Medical Officer, defended health officials’ actions.
He said they had acted rapidly and in keeping with existing meningitis guidelines.
But a spokeswoman for the MRF said the government’s study group could look at tightening guidelines on managing meningitis.
The guidelines were last updated in January 1997.
The MRF said lessons could be learnt from studying how cases affect a small population group such as Wales.

Blog:’Spreading the news’

Barbara was told the tests had found cancer cells in her breast. But, because she had seen the signs early and the disease had not spread, she was offered a lumpectomy, where just the cancerous lump is removed.
“It is absolutely earth-shattering to be told you have cancer.
“My first reaction was that I should be dead my Christmas.
“But I discovered there is more out there for cancer patients than you can probably imagine.”
Barbara added: “I had private insurance, so I had the operation on the following Monday evening.
“But even if I’d waited to have it on the NHS, it would have taken place within a couple of weeks.
“Because I found it early, I didn’t have to have chemotherapy, but I did have some sessions of radiotherapy.”
Barbara, who is now taking a course of tamoxifen, has been given a good prognosis, but says she regularly checks her breasts to make sure nothing has changed.
“I feel wonderful.
“And I do want to say that women must examine themselves and get to the doctor quickly if they spot anything.
“I’m grateful to all the researchers working in this area, but also to the women.
“I knew that puckering of skin was a problem because other women had come out of their ‘embarrassment shells’ and spread the news.”

Republican sympathisers

In January this year an Australian man, Harry Nicolaides, was also jailed for three years over a novel he wrote four years ago in which he referred briefly to the scandalous private life of a Thai crown prince. He was later pardoned.
Police say they are now preparing to arrest several more anti-government activists on the same charge.
The pro-Thaksin red shirt movement is known to have a number of republican sympathisers and former communists in its ranks.
Mr Thaksin himself has been accused by his critics of harbouring plans to abolish the monarchy, accusations he has strongly denied.
The government has acknowledged that the lese majeste law has flaws – but says it is necessary to protect the monarchy.
Critics of the law argue that it is being used to stifle discussion of the monarchy’s future, at a time of heightened public anxiety over the succession, because of the King’s age and frail health.

Blog:Capital’s clean streets praised

Edinburgh’s streets achieved their highest ever score for cleanliness during the Festival despite a bin strike in the city.
A new CIMS independent survey conducted by Keep Scotland Beautiful in late August, audited 58 sites across the city centre, scoring them individually.
The overall score was 67 – the highest the city centre has ever gained.
The survey measures graffiti, weeds, vandalism, dog fouling, flyposting and the prevalence of different litter.
This year, various measures, including a crackdown on cigarette butts and chewing gum, were taken in the city centre to boost cleanliness
Thousands of personal pouches for disposal of these items were handed out to businesses and individuals.
Extra bins were installed in key locations to tackle the increase in litter generated by the hundreds of thousands of visitors during the Edinburgh Festival.
During August, 124 fixed penalty notices and almost 100 verbal warnings were handed out to people for littering and other offences.
Edinburgh City Council provided a 24/7 operation throughout the Festival period for street cleaning and litter bin emptying.
A new initiative, which provided legal advertising sites to festival venues, has also been hailed in ridding the city of fly-posters.
City centre streets were cleaned of all graffiti in the days before the festival and graffiti-proof paints were applied to hot spots as a preventative measure.

Blog: Soft landings

But what is it all for – is the Moon really that exciting any more? Haven’t we been there, planted the flags, bought the Apollo t-shirts and brought back the Moon rock?
Certainly we have 365kg of Moon material on the Earth, but I think there are many scientific aspects still to be achieved there,” said Peter Falkner, head of Estec’s planetary exploration studies section.
And there are technological objectives which go beyond a Moon visit. Just as Smart-1 has tested an ion drive for long-distance propulsion, a lunar lander could also pilot equipment and procedures which could later find a use on more far-flung missions.
“Certainly there are several technological issues to be solved,” observed Dr Faulkner, recalling the successful landing of the Huygens probe on Titan and the less successful end of the Beagle 2 Mars mission.
“So far in Europe we have demonstrated landing on a body with an atmosphere successfully, on Titan, and there are several reasons for the failure we had on Mars.
“On the Moon there is no atmosphere; you need a fully controlled landing, so your orbital velocity has to be reduced with a chemical engine. At the moment we do not have all this technology completely available in Europe, so this is what has to be developed.”
At this point the cynic says “Well OK, but Nasa did it in the 1960s, and with people on board. What is the rationale for getting where the Americans were half a century earlier?”

Blog:Iraqi shoe thrower welcomed home

The Iraqi journalist who threw a pair of shoes at President Bush at a news conference in Baghdad says he was tortured in jail.
Muntadar al-Zaidi was released on Tuesday after serving nine months. The BBC’s Hugh Sykes in Baghdad describes the day’s unfolding events.
After leaving prison, Muntadar al-Zaidi went straight to al Baghdadiya – the TV station he was working for at the news conference where he threw the shoes.
Addressing his own news conference, he said he had been tortured: “At the very moment that the Prime Minister Mr al-Maliki was on TV saying he wouldn’t rest until he was sure I was sleeping on a comfortable bed, I was being hideously tortured.
“I was being given electric shocks, and being hit with cables and steel roods… I was left handcuffed and immersed in water until dawn in cold weather. I demand that Mr al-Maliki apologise for concealing the truth.”
An advisor to the prime minister told the BBC that the torture allegation should be investigated
And a spokesman for the ministry of human rights told us they do not believe he was tortured in the jail where he spent the past nine months, as it is a “detention centre with acceptable human rights standards”.
They concluded that, if he was tortured, it must have happened soon after he was arrested and before his trial.
At his news conference, Mr Zaidi offered an explanation for his shoe-throwing protest.

Blog:More immunity for Mousa witnesses

Soldiers giving evidence to an inquiry into the death of Iraqi Baha Mousa have been granted extra legal protection.
A new ruling states that they will not face disciplinary action if their own evidence suggests they have lied or withheld information previously.
Their own testimony also cannot be used to decide whether to prosecute them, but evidence from other witnesses could still lead to criminal proceedings.
Mr Mousa, 26, died in British army custody in Basra in September 2003.
The inquiry into his death is due to start hearing evidence in the spring.
